To provide a statewide organization for military vehicle enthusiasts, historians, preservationists
and collectors interested in the acquisition,
restoration/preservation, public education and safe operation
of historic
military
vehicles & related items.
In the early part of 2005, Ken Yuly, Lyle Torno and Jerry Schemp sat down and had breakfast at a Minot
cafe. They got to talking about the advantages of affiliating the North Dakota Military Vehicles
Collectors Association, a loose group of 4 or 5 people, with the National Organization, Military
Vehicle Preservation Association (MVPA). The decision was made that the upcoming Minot
Gun Show would be the first try at “enlisting” members for a North Dakota affiliate of
MVPA. We ordered some membership material from the National office in Missouri, and set up a table
among the military vehicles we had on display at the show. We were all gratified by the response,
we signed up 8 members who either joined or were already a member of MVPA, and another 8
members as “associate” members, that is members of only the ND-MVCA The initial dues
schedule was set at $10 for associate members, and the $35.00 national dues for those who wanted
to join the MVPA also. After the show, the charter officers were selected, Ken Yuly
as President, Lyle Torno as Vice-President, Jerry Schempp as Secretary/Treasurer and news letter
editor, and Dennis Sundby as Safety Officer. A checking account was setup and the necessary
Internal Revenue ID number was obtained. Our application for association with the MVPA was
submitted in late March, and they tentatively approved it in early April 2006. (Tentative approval until
the MVPA Board meeting set for the National Convention at the MVPA meeting in Duluth, MN in August
of 2006.
For a state like ours we have a pretty
strong group. Currently we have over 45+ members with over 200 Vehicles. We have
members restoring or have restored anything from a DUKW, Mule, Weasel, Holt crawler and of course Jeeps, Deuces’ and
Half tracks. No "Tanks" yet but I do know of a member looking! In 2006 we were honored
to be able to display at the Grand Forks AFB air show and the 164thInfantry Regiment road dedication. One of our clubs major highlights was when a members truck won
its class, of restored vehicle, at the MVPA convention in Dayton. We have an annual summer show, which moves around
the state, we travel to various MV shows, Iola WI, and the MVPA annual convention.
Our dues ($15 a year or $25 for 2 years), help cover this
web site expense, various newsletters and meetings expenses. We like to keep our operation light, informal and fun.
We like to network for parts, go to parades and display and even do a trail ride or 2 during the year. If you are a MV owner or just want to talk about MV’s give us a call or better yet become
a member.
